15 June 1996: In light of recent advances in the U.S. described at the Fourth Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology, and of the stray path the Japanese seem to be taking toward neuroscience and biological approaches (not biochips again!), I feel that the U.S. has regained the lead in developing the technological base needed for molecular nanotechnology.—D.R.
